Second largest in the nation, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) serves over 475,000 students in transitional kindergarten through 12th grade at over 1,000 schools. The District also has over 200 independently-operated public charter schools, authorized by the Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education.
LAUSD is broken into four Regions: West, East, South and North. Kester Elementary is located in Region North, made up of two recently combined districts: Northwest and Northeast. The Superintendent for Region North is Dr. David Baca.
Within Region North there are many Community of Schools. What are Community of Schools (CoS)? Community of Schools are regional groupings of schools within a neighborhood where local district staff are centralized to better assist families. Los Angeles Unified launched the CoS model to make it easier and more efficient for students, families, and school staff to get the support they need.
Kester Elementary belongs to the Van Nuys/Valley Glen CoS. There are many valuable services offered by our CoS including town hall meetings, newsletters, parent and family webinars, special education resources and much more. Open to everyone, families are encouraged to become active participants to help support and prepare our students.
The LAUSD School Board of Education has 7 members. Kester Elementary is in District 3 which is represented by Scott M. Schmerelson. Mr. Schmerelson was elected to this position in 2015 and re-elected in 2020 for another term. This school year, Mr. Schmerelson is Chairperson of both the Special Education and Family & Community Engagement committees. The School Board meets every month and the agendas and meetings are open and available to the public. Click here to stream the meetings in English and Spanish.
